Public transport is very well organized in Cartagena, according to Colombian standards.
Cartagena has multiple and economical ways of transportation. You can use taxis, of course, as well as a range of different buses: buses ejecutivos, buses intermedios, microbuses, busetas, and the Metrocar bus system, which takes people from the airport to the city and vice versa. Besides, public transport is very cheap, with most bus tickets only costing 1000 pesos, which is the equivalent of 30 eurocents.
Of course, always pay attention to your personal belongings. Even in Cartagena, people will try and rob your phone, if you’re not careful. It is therefore advised to wear your backpack in front, just to be safe. This will make sure that people do not try and rob you as fast. A lot of products that we have are simply inaccessible for them.
In beautiful Cartagena, there is a lot to do. It boasts a rich history, colorful buildings and there are a lot things to do in and around the city. In the centre, you will find the ‘walled city’, which was a fortress that used to protect the city from storms and pirates. In this part of town, you will find a lot of bars, restaurants, hotels and shops. There is also a castle, San Felipe de Barajas, which gives a great overview of the city.
Colombians are very curious and proud of their country, so don't be afraid that they want to have a nice chat with you out of nowhere and ask where you come from. Take the time to enjoy this! In Colombia everything goes a bit slower, but the trick is to just to go along with it.
Have you lost your way, feel free to ask for the right direction. You always get an answer! However, this does not always mean that they actually know where to go. Colombians often find it difficult to say that they don't know or can't help you. Sometimes you are sent in the wrong direction. Don't give people money because they help you, instead thank them kindly. By giving money you create the expectation that you will do this the next time again, which results in a disappearance of the beautiful spontaneity of the Colombian culture.
